SMAD210: News Reporting andf Writing

For this assignment, I attended JMU’s annual Study Abroad Fair and produced a news feature highlighting student interest, program opportunities, and the perspectives of faculty and study-abroad advisors. The goal was to practice on-site reporting, interviewing, AP Style writing, and deadline-driven story production.

Step 3: rough draft

  • Wrote the initial article using AP Style

  • Organized the story around a clear news angle: growing interest in study abroad and how JMU programs are adapting

  • Selected strong quotes and vivid scene-setting details to open the feature

  • Revised based on peer workshop feedback, focusing on clarity, structure, and journalistic balance

Creative & Media Rationale

  • News feature format allowed the story to incorporate both factual reporting and human-centered narratives, giving readers a sense of the fair’s energy while still delivering practical information.

  • I prioritized Concise AP Style language

  • Accurate attribution and fact-checking

  • Engaging scene-setting to bring readers into the event

  • A balanced approach, addressing benefits and challenges for students considering study abroad
