SMAD202: Foundations of AudioVisual Storytelling
For this project, I created a short continuity-focused video following my teammate through a playful pre-game routine—from getting ready in the locker room to scoring on the field. The goal was to showcase my skills in storytelling, camera work, continuity editing, and audio design in a fun, cinematic way.
step 1: Creative Concept & Story Development

For my final project, I wanted to create a short, energetic, and playful sequence that showcased both my editing skills and a familiar environment: the JMU field hockey field. I decided to follow my teammate, Katie Fricke, through a miniature “game-day moment,” capturing her routine from the locker room to scoring a goal.
The storyline is intentionally simple and lighthearted, but it allowed me to focus on the assignment’s key goal, effective continuity editing, while working with motion, action, and natural pacing.

The story unfolds linearly: Katie gets ready, enters the field, warms up, takes a breath, and ultimately scores. The simplicity of the plot made it easier to design clean match-on-action moments and motivated camera movement, ensuring that each shot smoothly connected to the next.

step 2: PRE-PRODUCTION PLANNING

I wrote a short script and recruited my teammate and friend, Katie Fricke (ironically our goalie) to act as a field player. I scheduled the shoot, prepared my shot list, and planned intentional moments of action to maximize continuity opportunities (shoe tying, jacket zipping, grabbing equipment, entering the field, etc.).
Step 3: Production

Filming took place on a cold, windy morning, which introduced audio challenges. Although Katie isn’t a field player, she was excited to help. We worked through some continuity-focused frustrations (mostly me stressing about consistency, and Katie wanting to improvise), but ultimately captured the full sequence.
Step 4: Editing

Editing was my favorite part. I used match-on-action cuts, consistent screen direction, and varied framing to create smooth continuity. The wind created audio problems, so I removed subtitles after receiving feedback and boosted the dialogue volume significantly. I also replaced my original music choice to better support the tone of the opening sequence.
